How to Save Money on Gas

Financially beneficial changes to make to your driving lifestyle.

For most families, gas expenses make up a large portion of their monthly budget with work commutes, school drop-offs, and getting the kids to and from activities and practices. Gas prices can also be unpredictable, so it’s not always a consistent expense. Learn ways to make your gas money go the distance.

Apply for a fuel savings or rewards program

Most gas station chains offer some type of savings or rewards program. These are usually easy to start and require very little information or effort to use. If you notice that you tend to use the same gas station chain more often than not, it might be worth signing up for their rewards program; it may also be connected to your favorite grocery store. Additionally, some credit cards offer specific rewards or points. Consider using one for buying gas to rack up points on your purchase. However, remember to pay off the balance every month or the interest paid may outweigh the rewards earned.

Work from home or carpool

Commuting to and from work makes up the largest portion of most gas budgets. With many companies remaining in a hybrid in-office and virtual work style, you can save on gas costs by opting to work from home. If that isn’t an option, try talking to co-workers about the possibility of carpooling. Taking turns driving reduces your gas costs and the wear and tear on your vehicle. Not only does it save you money, but you also reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Walk more to drive less

If you work close to home, opt to get some exercise and walk or bike to work. Not only do you save money, but more daily activity can positively affect your health. Even if you do drive, consider adding a bit more walking to your day by parking farther away from the entrance. Many people end up wasting gas and time circling the block or parking lot searching for a parking spot.

Don’t wait to fill up

Most people tend to wait until their tank is nearly empty to fill it up. This increases the risk of settling for a higher gas price. With differences in gas prices, you should fill up at a low-cost gas station when your tank is less than half full. By not settling for the first gas station you see, you can save money in the long run.

You do not have to make radical life changes or decisions to save money on gas. Follow these tips to build good habits over time. Just by following these strategies, you can save a good amount of money in the years to come.
